Message from the President
It’s October in Michigan, and I love the seasonal changes that we experience in my beloved state,
even if I have to put up with winter weather in March and April! Change is constant anyway, so
why not look for the good.
As you may know by now, we are looking at some big changes at UBC. Rev. Greg is now our part-
time minister. The administration duties will no longer be his. Those will be the responsibilities of the Leadership Council. At this time we have 3 people on the council.
Here are the areas filled, and those that remain open:
Chair – OPEN
Board Liaison - Julie Bliss
UBC Volunteer Coordinator, supporting Volunteer teams – OPEN
Classes & Special Events – Nancy Berdasco
Sunday Coordinator when Rev. Greg is away – Nancy Berdasco
Staff & Human Resources, including room rentals – Terri Newcomb
Youth Ministry – OPEN (not applicable at this time)
This council will make the decisions directly related to their assignments. The council will meet monthly with the Board Liaison reporting to the Board of Trustees.
We - the Board and the Leadership Council - are still trying to sort out the details of operating as a Leadership Council. This is new territory for all of us. There is no manual, template, or master plan to follow, though we have been referred to other ministries using such a model. On a suggestion from Rev. Greg, I have contacted Cynthia Vermillion-Foster from Unity Worldwide Ministries. She is the Executive Director of Member Services. This service offers insight, guidance and support for ministries in transition. Your board is dedicated to making spiritually guided, thoughtful and informed decisions to best lead us on this journey. We will accomplish our tasks with the help and support from you, our community.
We also have 3 Volunteer Team Leader openings and board vacancies:
Hospitality Team Leader
Outreach Ministry Team
With the new year there will be four Board vacancies: Two full 3 year positions, one 2 year, and one 1 year. Consider if you are called to serve as a leader and to grow with us during this time of transition.
I would ask each of you to prayerfully and spiritually consider if you have the desire, talents, and time to serve UBC in any of these openings. Please understand that I am speaking to each one of you reading this article. UBC needs these openings filled to remain the wonderful community that we have come to cherish. Every one of us is an answer.
As in a quote from Anne of Green Gables, ”I'm so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.” Enjoy our fall season, and while you take the time to appreciate the beautiful changes in nature, know that the changes that UBC faces can be just as wonderful. I truly hope you will choose to be a part of our journey.
All is in Divine Order,
Terri Newcomb - Board President
